Our living room was in dire need of a change and after a decade we finally decided to go all in. From paint to carpet, furniture and decor we changed it all. Out with the Old
When my then fiancé now husband and I started to talk about moving in together 16 years ago, we started to slowly purchase our large furniture items and store them at my parent’s farm in a shed. By the time we moved in together, we had a nice living room set, dining set and some bedrooms items.
We had the same white microfiber sofa set for 13 years, 2 kids and 3 dogs. I washed that set religiously and did my best to take good care of it, but after having the furniture for so long, my husband and I were ready to upgrade to something a bit more kid and pet friendly.
We purchased the Wembly chocolate Italian leather set you see above from American Furniture Warehouse and we absolutely love them, however, the entire living room and our build it yourself TV stand and side tables needed a re-haul.
Renovation Time
As you can see from the aerial photos, we have very tall ceilings in our living room that lead into an open staircase and a hallway. We bought this home basically brand new, but we were expecting our son and painting everything seemed daunting at the time.
Our furniture is very heavy and I told my husband that if we replaced the TV stand, we would be painting and if that happened, carper would also need to happen. So we went all in and hired a contractor to come and paint the massive walls.
Once the walls were painted, I spent an entire day painting all the trim and doors throughout the house and then we made an appointment to pick out our new carpet. The carpet had to be replaced, after our puppy ate 3 holes in it a few years ago.
Getting that junky carpet out of our home made me so happy and the new carpet we chose was the highest quality, marshmallow soft and stain resistant. We loved that the colors in the carpet would be able to pull from all of the major furniture pieces throughout our home and really bring everything together. It does such a great job with the earth tones and we are so happy with our carpet selection.
Shopping at American Furniture Warehouse
Growing up in Colorado, if you wanted quality furniture for a great price, you headed to American Furniture Warehouse. That still stands and so off we went to pick out a new entertainment center and side tables for our home.
I knew we were looking for a statement piece, with spaces for storage and display and we decided on the Urban Farmhouse 84” entertainment center. It was onto the side tables and they had to be sturdy, have storage and we wanted them to have power and USB ports to charge our devices. We found all of that in these sweet Laflorn side tables.
We placed our order and set up a quick payment plan with them and then set up our delivery date. The delivery date rolled up and right on schedule AFW delivered and set up the furniture. Once done, they sent me a delivery confirmation.
Earthy Living Room Design
We were limited on the arrangement of our living room based on the location of cables and plug-ins, but we knew that we needed a statement piece for our entertainment center due to the sheer size of our walls. We also wanted to create an Earthy living room design with textures and decorative pieces that brought in our love of the outdoors but was still warm and inviting.
This Urban Farmhouse entertainment center was perfect for our space. I wanted something that would blend well with our couches, but also had a modern natural feel to it. I also wanted it to have storage and places to showcase family photos and some other special items.
The storage is incredible in this console. I love that there are spaces for not only the decorative displays, but also for our DVD system and cable boxes and that if I wanted to, I could even hide those in the cabinets. Those cabinets are also super huge and we are still undecided about what we want to store in there. I want to put our movie collection and my husband is leaning towards some gaming consoles.
While at American Furniture I did snag a couple home décor pieces. I fell in love with these pinecones and this open wire cork basket lantern. With the Earthy modern theme we were aiming for, the natural cork and wires of this lantern were perfect. I added in a faux candle on a timer that comes on each night and in the evening there is this beautiful glow that lights up our console. The pinecones were honestly an impulse grab but now that they are in the space, I could not imagine the space without them.
We also purchased this gorgeous aspen painting on wood as well as a canvas of a waterfall and a large clock. American Furniture has a huge variety of home decor pieces and I love that you can just walk in and even take items off the wall to purchase. We took this aspen painting off the wall and paid for it right at one of their sales kiosks. It is probably my favorite piece of art we have in our house!
Our couches also came from American Furniture while we were looking for a reclining set that we could all lounge on and enjoy movie nights together, but that also were easy to wipe down and wouldn’t hold onto pet hair. We have had this set for a couple years and they are everything we wanted and more, plus they are still available in store! The furniture and decor really made our Earthy living room design come through and we are elated with how well it turned out.
The Final Reveal
After new furniture, paint, carpet, pillows, window dressing, wall hangings, home décor and more, the space is finally done and it is so much more than I expected. I feel like this is my home and my space for the first time since we moved in over a decade ago. Everything is so functional and we love how American Furniture Warehouse had everything we were looking for to truly design a space that brought that homey feeling.
The space is bright and airy but also has those natural textures and colors that bring that cozy warmth that we were hoping for with our Earthy living room design. We are spending so much more time in this space as a family and we are truly loving that this transformation has created a space that truly invites you in. Looking at the change over the last decade and I am just elated to see that we have finally created a space that truly showcases our style and is so comfortable.
