Our family has some big news coming in November!  My brother is expecting his first child and we are so excited to welcome this little boy into our lives.  As we prepare for the upcoming baby shower, I wanted to do something  a bit more special, so I created this gentle baby bath essentials kit with a personalized hooded towel tutorial, featuring our favorite reformulated JOHNSON’S baby products!

Shopping for Supplies

One of the gifts that we were given when our daughter was born was a personalized hooded towel.  She still uses it 5 years later and it is in great condition.  For our gift to my brother and his wife (they do not do social media so I am safe here), I am making them a bath time essentials kit with the new gentle formula of JOHNSON’S® and a personalized hooded towel to wrap my sweet nephew in! I ran to our local Albertsons and grabbed our favorite JOHNSON’S® products to put in the bath kit.  Albertsons is a very easy one stop shop for everything from baby items to bakery items, so when I needed to purchase items for this bath essentials kit, I headed right in to Albertsons to get everything I needed.

Recently, JOHNSON’S® reformulated their baby products to be gentler.  They now include 90% naturally derived ingredients, they are dye free, sulfate free, paraben free, phthlate free and worry free.  With 50% fewer ingredients and the new pump tops, JOHNSON’S® products are definitely a must for families.  We have been using JOHNSON’S® products on our kids since our son was an infant and continue to use them.  They have always been a staple in our home, they are priced great, and the new gentle formula gives me confidence that JOHNSON’S® is listening to their consumers.  They are also the #1 choice of hospitals and are specifically designed to care for newborn’s skin.

Our family keeps a stockpile of JOHNSON’S® essentials. Bath time always includes the classic JOHNSON’S® Baby head-to-toe® Wash.  Tear free always makes washing up our kids easy and stress free.  I want that for my nephew too, so of course we are including this in the bath essentials kit. Out of the bath we always follow up with the lavender JOHNSON’S® Baby Lotion bedtime® to keep their skin soft and help relax them into that sweet sleepy time.  We also always have JOHNSON’S® Soothing Vapor bath® to help open up our airways when cold and flu season hits and JOHNSON’S® Skin Nourish Vanilla Oat wash® for itchy dry skin that is so common in Colorado.

To complete the bath essentials kit, I purchased an adult bath towel and matching wash cloths along with an embroidery hoop, embroidery floss and needles and of course a rubber ducky!  I also grabbed a plastic basket to store bath supplies or toys in that is water proof.  With all the supplies on hand, it was time to get to making the personalized hooded towel!

Creating the Personalized Hooded Towel

To create the personalized hooded towel, you will first need to take 1 wash cloth and place it in an embroidery hoop.  I want the design on the side of the hood, so my hoop is placed to the left of the center fold on the wash cloth.  Next I created a design to put on the hood and printed it on plain printer paper and pinned it to the center of the embroidery hoop.

I took some embroidery floss and I quickly hand sewed the outline of the deer head and the baby’s initials.  I then tore the paper away from the design gently and took more embroidery floss to fill in the details and really make it pop.  The baby’s name is being kept a secret from everyone so I made his initials blend in with the towel a bit more so that my sister can discreetly look at the towel without giving anything away.  The great thing about hand embroidery is that it does not have to be perfect.  The little imperfections are actually really pretty and add that personal touch, so even if you are not great at sewing, give this a try, I bet you will make something incredible.

Once the personalization was done, I removed the wash cloth from the hoop and folded it in half wrong side of the design out.  I then pinned the top of the short side together as you see below and ran a quick stitch line across the short side.  Flipping it right side out, you should now get the hood of the towel. Make sure to only sew ONE side.

Then you need to pin the hood to the bath towel.  Just pin the wash cloth to the bath towel as you see below.  I usually lay the bath towel landscape oriented on a flat surface and then I locate the center fold.  I then align the center of the bath towel fold with the center of the wash cloth fold and I pin them together.

Next you just need to run a simple line stitch to connect the hood to the towel.  You can also do this by hand if you prefer.  I just use my sewing machine because it only takes a few moments and everything is done.

Viola!  The hooded towel is complete and ready for use.  It hangs up easily for drying and the personalization is something that I know my brother and sister will just love.  I cannot wait to see my snuggly nephew wrapped up in this towel.
