A Passion for Science
I was never a “science person” growing up. It wasn’t that I hated it, it was just that I wasn’t particularly engaged with it. It wasn’t until I decided to major in dental hygiene that I was really engulfed in science. I remember getting through that first year of college and thinking that science was alright. It had some cool stuff, but that I was glad I wouldn’t be teaching it…funny right.
It wasn’t until my 2nd year of pre-requisites for the dental hygiene program that I took microbiology and anatomy & physiology and I truly realized how freaking cool our body, and the microorganisms that we share it with, are! I never got that dental hygiene degree because I was meant to be in the classroom, teaching kids, about science and life. I just built a passion for science and want to share that with the world, which is why I wanted to write this post about probiotics and family health.
What are Probiotics?
Those microorganisms and that body though, they are constant discussions that I have in and outside of the classroom. One common discussion that comes up is probiotics and the common question about what they are and what they do. Probiotic means “for life” and they are live microorganisms that can have a positive health benefit.
Most probiotics contain the same (or similar) live bacteria that inhabit our bodies already and help us with digestion, vitamin production and management of disease causing microorganisms. These life bacteria are essential to our microbiome which keeps us healthy. Probiotics help to keep a balance in our body and can be used to treat and prevent many ailments.
Probiotics and Family Health
As a mom, I want my kids to be healthy. I am not the mom that runs my kids to the doctor for every cough or stomach pain. I grew up without insurance and I know how the body works as long as we give it the supports it needs. Now this is not to say that I do not take the kids to the doctor, believe me they go when they need to, but I do make sure to put supports in place to help those visits be less frequent.
Parents are always wondering how can we best support our family and their health and often times doctors will ask if you are taking vitamins and probiotics. Probiotics can really benefit your health and can help with diarrhea, UTI’s, eczema in children and even vaginal infections. In addition, to taking a vitamin daily, my kids take a probiotic and I firmly believe that the reason that my son’s skin is less reactive and my daughter’s gentle tummy is not as bothersome is because of our probiotics. Probiotics and family health go hand in hand.
A Brand You Can Trust
We recently switched our daily probiotic to the line of Jarrow Probiotics. They are pioneers in the probiotic industry and pride themselves on developing science-based probiotics with high quality, scientifically-documented strains. Strains do matter and when you are putting living organisms into your body, you want to know which ones are going in. Jarrow is one of the few brands that puts the exact strains on the box!
As I mentioned above, probiotics can be very similar to what our body naturally has in our microbiome and the goal with taking a probiotic is to put in the microorganisms that are going to best support your bodies needs. When you know what strain you are putting in, you can easily find out what role they specifically play in your body and how that benefits you. I love the transparency of Jarrow Probiotics and the huge range of products they have out to support families everywhere.
Our Personal Probiotic Experience
I personally take the Jarro-Dophilus EPS to help with my immune function and gut health. As a teacher, I need all the natural supports I can get, because those schools are germ infested and this teacher can’t be missing days constantly. In just 3 weeks of using the EPS, my allergies are actually calmer (and let me tell you, this allergy season is killer) and I feel much more regular in the gut realm.
My children have been taking the Yum-Yum Dophilus and both really like that they are chewable and raspberry flavored! It is never a fight to take the probiotic because they do not have to swallow a pill whole. I am seeing my son’s eczema and allergies are also less inflamed and my daughter is having less tummy aches as well.
We are definitely seeing the benefits of probiotics in our family and you can learn more about Jarrow’s family of products ranging from women’s health, to infant formulas and more! Make sure to check them out!
