Ok, so it did not go down exactly like that. I was browsing my newsfeed on the Facebook and saw a friend post that her parents had 3 chocolate lab puppies ready for their forever homes. I swear I was NOT looking for a new dog. I am still very much in mourning over my sweet Mia girl and was sure that I was not ready for a new dog. Those little puppy faces though stole my heart and so I started asking a few questions about the dogs.
Just a week earlier I had told our kids that mama wasn’t ready for a new dog and that I believe that dogs come to us, we do not go looking for them. Oddly enough the night before our little pup joined our family, I was looking at the three yellow labs sleeping all over my living room (we were babysitting my parents dogs) and thinking that I wouldn’t mind having a chocolate lab someday. I took this little thought as a sign, when those sweet pups came across my newsfeed
I asked the husband if we could go look at the puppies and maybe consider getting a pup to add to our family. The man was 4 days post-op from his tonsillectomy and actually agreed. So we headed just a few miles up the road from our home to a little farm to take a peek at the chocolate lab puppies.
Yes, I said chocolate lab. You can see in the photos that our little girl is not completely chocolate in her coat. She has some yellow markings on her face, chest and feet and although she is purebred and comes from papered parents (pictured above) she is a mosaic and has yellow lab markings. Her markings are similar to those of a calico cat and are caused from the chocolate color genes being turned off during embryological development and the yellow color being turned on. The owners of the parent dogs said that there were 9 puppies in the litter. Four pups were chocolate, three were yellow and two had the mixed markings like our girl. I did some google sleuthing and found that although it is very rare, mosaic labs are a thing and the only issue with her differences is that we could not show her and papering her might be a process. I do not show dogs, so for me it doesn’t matter.
