Teaching Kids about Nature
Growing up in Colorado, I learned early on how to respect and care for the world around me. “Leave No Trace” is an unofficial motto here and teaching kids about nature is paramount to keeping Colorado beautiful.

As a biology teacher my mission is to inspire kids to take an interest in our ecosystem and to hopefully get them into nature to learn, appreciate and engage with the organisms and help protect these places. As a mom, my goal is the same, but sometimes getting my own kids motivated can be tough when grades are not a factor. Enter, Earth Rangers!
What are Earth Rangers?
Earth Rangers is a program focused on environmental education and conservation. They are charity based and work to educate children and families about environmental issues, and motivate them to take action to protect the environment and the animals that call it home.

Earth Rangers offers not only educational resources, but a great podcast, and free memberships for kids! They have also created an awesome app that you can download here that is free and super fun to use for both kids and families. The app gets kids in nature by going on missions and taking on challenges, to read and interact with articles and if inspired, to even adopt animals virtually that will actually help them!
How to Get Kids in Nature with Earth Rangers
I honestly did not realize how easy it would be to get kids in nature with just a little app, but truthfully, my daughter checks in regularly, watches the videos, takes on missions and even works to get everyone in our home involved with little changes. Check out the list below on how to get kids in nature with Earth Rangers
- Download the Earth Rangers App: it is quick, easy and free!

- Sign up for a free membership: Parents complete the sign up and make sure to include your address! Earth Rangers sends out a great welcome package and a membership card too!

- Get Involved on the App: Work with your child to go through the app and start learning, participating in missions and getting in nature.

- Participate as a Parent too: Lead by example! The app is inspiring and fun and I can guarantee your child will want to start creating a pollinator garden, or recycling (if you don’t already) or even just take a walk to identify organisms around them. Go with them, take an interest and enjoy the time.
