We are eight weeks into school.  It is midterms week and the exhaustion is real.  I am thankful that even though my body resources are running low this week, that our natural resources are not. However, my reality is not the reality of many on this Earth.  As I reflect on this first quarter of the semester, I wanted to come up with some fantastic ways for us help everyone out.

This morning when I got my kids out of bed, it was the first real fall day that Colorado has had this year.  My kids and I were both just exhausted.  I am in the midst of grading 180 essays, my son has conferences this week and the tiny peanut told me yesterday she was being naughty in class because she just wanted to sleep.  Like I said, our resources are running low right now.

I teach 180 freshmen and sophomores in Biology every single day.  I love my job, I love my school and I love science.  My passion is environmental issues and this week my students are closing out our human impact section of the ecology unit. Everyone is exhausted.

My students have been wonderful as we go over natural resources, and the experiences of living in a first world country versus a third world country.  One of the big topics we discuss is water as a resource.  Water is one of those resources that we take for granted here in the U.S.  In other nations, there are wars happening over water.  Women and children are walking miles and miles to get water and carry it back to their villages and most of the time that water is not clean.  Those same kids are missing the opportunities to attend school because of the tasking job of fetching water. There are privatization of water rights happening all over the world, which is limiting the resources to native populations. Water is such a controversial resource on Earth.  Now comparing this to populations in the United States, we have regular access to water for everything.  We can drink, bath and clean anytime we really want for the most part.

It always amazes me that students struggle to understand that water is so valuable and that there are millions of people that do not have access to clean water.  I tell them that some kids cannot even attend schools because getting water is more important that getting an education.  I explain to them that while we are getting into the routines of being back to school, that other people are dying because they contracted a disease from polluted water.

My students tend to take these discussions to a place where they inquire about how they can help.  To that, I decided to come up with some easy ideas to help people give back.

There are so many people that could use help, and access to clean drinking water is a right that every single human should have.  Some ideas I came up with are backpack drives for kids in need of school supplies, clothing drives would work the same.  At our school we sponsor families during the holiday seasons and I know there are organizations that also do this overseas.  Fundraisers are a great way for people to raise money to build wells closer to villages, or even purchase bottled water or Lifestraws to send overseas. One of my current favorites to help provide clean water and education is the #40Pounds Challenge.

For every #40Pounds Challenge photo uploaded to Instagram, Emergen-C® will donate $5.00 to charity: water to help fun programs that bring clean, accessible water to communities in Ethiopia.  All participants need to do is take a photo of them holding something that weighs around 40 pounds and upload it to Instagram using the hashtag #40Pounds and tagging @EmergenC.  If you want more details feel free to check out www.emergenctransforms.com.

This is such an easy way to give back and help out.  I am excited to post our selfie above and so thankful that Emergen-C is partnering with charity: water to give back to people who desperately deserve the same access to water that we have.
