Monday evening we went to the screening of A Wrinkle In Time, and it was great, but we were glad we did not bring the kids.  After Censie asked me if we would have our kids with us, I started to second guess our choice and at the last minute, I scrambled to find a sitter.  After seeing the movie, I was definitely glad that we made that choice and here is why.

A Wrinkle In Time is based on the books written in the 1960s.  When we got into our seats, I was asked if I read the book and I obviously had not and responded so.  I mentioned that we decided not to bring the kids because we heard there were some portions of the movie that could be considered scary for young kids and that age 8+ is the recommendation.  The lady sitting next to me confirmed that there were some portions from the book that she was wondering how they would portray them in the film and that they could be scary for sure.  Yup, good decision not to take the kids.

When the movie started, it was all science all over the place and an overwhelming sense of love within the family.  I was immediately entranced and really excited to see what direction this film would be going. I loved Meg and felt every feeling she released as the showed her adjusting and changing to various situations in her life.

Charles Wallace was magical.  Literally, this kid is going places and was phenomenal in the film.  Bringing in Mrs. Which, Mrs. WhatsIt and Mrs. Who to the dynamic.  I was on edge wondering where this magical movie was going to go.  For a good 40 minutes of the movie, I was questioning why we decided not to bring the kids.  So far the movie was wonderful and fun and although there were some underlying bigger ideas it was overall just really awesome.

The Mrs. were amazing.  Both wise and whimsical, the Mrs. guided the story along with Meg and Charles Wallace.  We laughed a lot at various moments and at others we were inspired and intrigued.  So far, the movie was great.  In fact the scene where the characters move to a different world was literally magnificent.  I was loving every single moment.

However, the second half of the film showed me why my kids were just not ready for this movie yet.  There are definitely some dark scenes, there are easily some scary moments and things that my kids would not have been able to handle.  Although my husband and I ended up loving the movie, I know that our kids would not have done well.  There are some very big topics covered in this movie, from bullying, to the loss of a parent and so much more and although my son is nearly there, our little girl is no where near and would have been pretty upset during a few scenes.  I am really glad we chose to have them stay with a sitter and that we previewed the movie prior to introducing them to it.  I also now want to read the book with my kids.

Personally, I loved the movie and coincidently when we went to my sons book fair the next day, my husband grabbed the book because he knew I was ready to read it.  He also ended up really enjoying the movie and told me that when the kids are older he thinks this would be a great way for us to talk to them about some of those bigger topics.  I totally agree.  A Wrinkle In Time is really beautifully made, with an amazing cast and spectacular special effects and I highly encourage families with kids over the age of 8 to check it out.  It is awesome.
